KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Paul Anderson Educational Consultant Title: When Do I Teach? Explicit Instruction in the 3-Dimensional Classroom Inquiry-based learning is at the heart of the three-dimensional classroom, but without well-timed explicit instruction, students may struggle to make sense of core ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts. So, when should we teach? In this keynote, Paul Andersen unpacks the role of explicit instruction as a strategic tool—one that amplifies, rather than replaces, student-driven sensemaking. Biography Paul Andersen is an educational consultant and YouTube creator living in Bozeman, MT. With over 20 years of experience teaching science in Montana, Paul has developed a strong focus on 3-dimensional learning and inquiry-based education. He was honored as the 2011 Montana Teacher of the Year and was a finalist for the 2011 National Teacher of the Year. In addition to his teaching career, Paul has created hundreds of science tutorials on his Bozeman Science channel, which have millions of views worldwide. His videos and tutorials have become invaluable resources for students and educators alike. Over the last ten years, Paul has provided professional development training for thousands of students, teachers, and administrators around the globe, emphasizing practical and meaningful strategies that can be applied immediately in the classroom. Paul is also the curator of The Wonder of Science website, a comprehensive platform created to support the next generation of science teachers. The website aggregates resources developed by Paul and other educators implementing the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), including videos, assessments, and mini-lessons. |

Dr. Elizabeth Schultheis Co-founder of Data Nuggets Title: Bringing authentic data and science stories into the classroom with Data Nuggets Dr. Elizabeth Schultheis is the co-founder of Data Nuggets and the Education & Outreach Coordinator for the Long Term Ecological Research Program at the Kellogg Biological Station. She directs the KBS LTER’s community engagement, education, and communications initiatives. As a broadly trained plant biologist, ecologist, and discipline based education researcher, Elizabeth uses her scientific and communication skills to help scientists share their stories and research with broad audiences to promote a passion for science and data literacy in the next generation. Data Nuggets are free classroom activities, co-designed by scientists and teachers. They bring contemporary research and authentic data into the K-12 classroom. Data Nuggets feature a scientist and the story of what inspired their research. Students are guided through the entire process of science, including identifying hypotheses and predictions, making and interpreting graphs, supporting claims using data as evidence, and asking their own questions for future research. Data Nuggets have been shown to increase student engagement in the classroom and promote an interest in STEM careers in the next generation. In this hands-on session, participants will get an introduction to Data Nuggets, explore an authentic dataset, and get many resources that are ready to use in their classroom the next day! |
